We’ve come a long way in our approach to developing commercial retail properties, since our first project in the mid-1950s. Back then development property was plentiful and reasonably priced. Materials and labor costs were also affordable. There were fewer regulations and even less regard for any impact on the community or the environment.

Fast-forward nearly half a century and conditions are dramatically different. Today, a developer of commercial retail space, particularly in urban areas, must have a well-developed economic and social sensibility. Growing concerns about long-term economic and environmental sustainability, new attitudes and involvement of the surrounding community, along with the age-old need to produce profits, require developers to rethink standard practices of the past. There’s no room in today’s economic climate and social landscape for a cookie-cutter approach, or a build-it-and-they-will-come mentality.
